Where to Drink the Best Bloody Marys Around the Twin Cities.

A Bloody Mary cocktail is my favorite drink. Mostly because I drink one before I have dinner at a restaurant in town and I’m usually starving! I get really crabby when I’m hungry and this is the perfect drink to take the edge off. It will usually be served with a couple of olives (hopefully, stuffed with bleu cheese) with the richness of tomato juice. at least I feel like I’m getting some nourishment while I’m waiting!
The best Bloody Mary that I have ever tasted is my own. I know! How self centered! One of my Realtor buddies and I have discussed, someday, marketing and bottling my recipe. The only reason we haven’t is because we are too busy selling houses! My recipe is at the end of this discussion. Here are my favorite Bloody Mary’s at local restaurants in no particular order. This list will continue to grow, and if you have a favorite please feel free to submit it!
- Kincaids, St. Paul: They put a shrimp in it!
- Green Mill, anywhere in the Twin Cities: Don’t order an appetizer…it’s in the glass!
- Pittsburgh Blue, Maple Grove: Hotsie Totsie! Yowser!
- The Narrows, Navarre: Frosty glass, no frills, stalk of celery, just plain good!
The simple truth is that I’m an empty nester and am on blood pressure medication. Salt really isn’t supposed to be on the agenda.
I am so good about not salting my food. Most restaurant food is salty enough and there’s no need to add extra. Sometimes I sit down with friends who will salt their food before they even taste it. Now, that’s a bad habit. I keep my mouth shut. Back to the Bloody’s… Here’s a “don’t” for me: Never put a pickle in a Bloody Mary! Talk about extra salt! Whenever I order one, I always say, “and, no pickle please!” Where did a pickle in a Bloody Mary get started, anyway? Back in the day, it used to be a stalk of celery and then the pickle appeared. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good pickle! I just don’t enjoy munching on one while drinking my Bloody Mary. Here’s my recipe for a great Bloody Mary that won’t inflate your fingers and ankles… The amounts of each ingredient are up to you.
- Ice
- Vodka (cheap is fine. Seriously, you can’t taste it anyway with the tomato juice, so why bother with the good stuff?)
- Low-salt V8. They can’t keep it on the shelves in my local grocery stores.) Yoo hoo, grocery stores!
- Frank’s Red Hot Sauce
- Worcheshire sauce – teeny tiny splash
- Fresh ground pepper
- Something a little less than a teaspoon of fresh horseradish. (Best part!)
- Wedge of fresh lemon - Be sure to squeeze it in the drink.
- Stir.
If you make up this recipe and don’t enjoy it, why, I’ll eat a pickle!
